College Adviser Fellow, Oak Grove High School
Van Viet Thuy Nguyen is the proud daughter of two resilient, hardworking immigrant and refugee parents. She is a first-generation, Vietnamese-American college graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a dual degree in Public Health and Molecular & Cell Biology and a minor in Education. Born and raised in the Franklin-McKinley Elementary and East Side Union High School Districts in San Jose, she remembers many late nights where she and her entire family were awake, struggling to understand mathematic probability and learning to pronounce words like “island” and “sixth” so she and her sister could do well in school. These personal experiences drive her commitment to addressing the systemic causes of health and educational inequities in communities like her own. She loves collecting stickers and stories in her journal, celebrating Vietnamese culture through organizing and performance, and finding small things to be thankful for every single day.
