Tanzania Jimmerson

College Adviser Fellow, Castlemont High School

Tanzania is from Oakland, CA. She graduated from Envision Academy in 2014 and moved to Portland, OR, where she received her BA in Psychology from Lewis and Clark College. In college, Tanzania was a member of the Black Student Union for 4 years and of those 4 years, she was the Black Student Union's President for 1 year. While she was in Portland, she volunteered at 1 of 2 diverse high schools in the Portland Metro Area. During her volunteer work, she realized that her calling was helping low-income students of color get into college. She saw many intelligent and qualified students feel like college wasn't an option because they were either having troubles at home, didn't know much about the college process, or someone made them believe they couldn't achieve that goal. She wanted to change those students perception and give them the resources they did not have. She moved back home to follow her new passion and help the students from her community get into college.
