Oscar Murguia Zepeda

College Adviser Fellow, Gunderson High School

Oscar’s parents migrated from Teuchitlan Jalisco and settled in San Jose, CA where he was ultimately born and raised. He grew up in a low income predominately Latino community in South San Jose. Being a first generation student from an early age he had very little interest in academics as he got older realized the importance and value of education but unfortunately received very little guidance and support as to what he was going to do after high school. Knowing he wanted to pursue education he applied at De Anza College and was blessed with the opportunity be a part of the PUENTE program cohort. Through PUENTE he received the guidance and support I yearned for and realized the importance of just one meeting could do in part to his future. Through that guidance and support he was admitted to UC Berkeley; while at Berkeley he was involved with Hermanos Unidos and through Hermanos was connected to work at Y-scholars in downtown Berkeley a program very similar to what he was involved with at PUENTE. His passion in advising comes from his educational journey and the importance of having an advisor giving youth the reinforcement and providing them with information to make future goals attainable. Working in communities similar to the one he grew up in will truly be a pleasure being able to help the many students achieve their goals.
