Génesis Correa-Dávila

College Adviser Fellow, Gunderson High School

As a first generation Latina originally from the east side of San Jose, Génesis knew college was something she wanted but never something she was told could be possible because of what a acaedmic transcript or her appearance described her to be. She had to overcome many personal as well as academic obstacles, and having to carry that emotional and mental labor took a toll on her. However things took a turn for the better when she found Upward Bound. With their assistance and care, she was inspired to continue her journey at De Anza community college. Being surrounded by community who made her feel like she mattered and her goals mattered, Génesis transferred out and graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Education. Carrying her experiences with her, Génesis hopes to use her position as a college advisor to empower her students to find and make meaning for themselves around who they want to be and where they want to go on their own terms as well as break the structural barriers embedded within the education system in order to help give all present and future students the chance at a life they deserve.
